Intended Audience

The B.Sc. Programme in Science & Technology Studies is suitable for those working, or seeking employment, in a variety of technology-rich industries, such as Manufacturing, Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Medical and Precision Devices, who are aiming for professional advancement or wish to upskill. It will also appeal to those with an enthusiasm for science and technology for general interest and personal development.

Programme Ethos

The programme will have a more broad-based scope than traditional Science or Engineering Degrees. This approach is intended to produce well-rounded graduates with a broad and integrated understanding of enterprise processes and wide-ranging skills. The content of each module in the programme will reflect an integrated and applied approach to the knowledge requirements of the target industry sectors. For example, the whole product lifecycle will be addressed across the various modules. Also a strong ethos of sustainable development and environmental responsibility will permeate the content and teaching.

The development of personal transferable skills such as negotiating, problem-solving and networking will be systematically incorporated into the programme. These skills will enable students to become self-reliant and adaptable, and increase effectiveness at both the personal and enterprise level. There also will be a strong emphasis on developing best practice management systems and efficient work practices through a range of people, process and technology management modules.

Learning Outcomes

The programme provides students with a comprehensive grounding in the theoretical foundations of science and engineering, and introduces them to areas of specialist knowledge and operations found in today's advanced technological environments.

The applied aspects of the programme aim to:

  • Develop knowledge and understanding in the critical area of science and Technology and demonstrate how to leverage that knowledge for competitive advantage
  • Cultivate skills in problem identification, research design, data analysis and problem solving and exploit those skills to enhance innovation and facilitate process optimisation
  • Build the management and leadership capabilities of individuals and enterprises
  • Enable graduates to facilitate sustainable improvements at the personal and enterprise level through effective work systems and improved knowledge management
  • Enhance IT and Technology management skills with a view to optimising business processes and increasing personal productivity.

Progression

This programme is primarily intended to support those seeking career advancement. Graduates may also be considered for entry to any Masters Degree for which they are deemed to meet academic requirements.
