Entry Requirements

Diploma in Science & Technology Studies

The Diploma is primarily aimed at learners who have no previous third-level qualification. Applications will be assessed on the basis of an online application form. If you cannot apply online you may complete a printed application form and post to NUI Galway.

Applicants under 21 years of age on January 1 in year of entry must meet the following minimum entry requirements: A minimum of HC3 in two subjects and passes in four other subjects at H or O level in the Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) including; English, Irish, Mathematics, a laboratory science subject i.e. Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Physics with Chemistry (joint) or Agricultural Science and any other subject recognised for entry purposes.

Applicants aged 21 years and older by January 1 in year of entry may enter as mature students.  In this case a pass standard in Leaving Certificate Mathematics or equivalent is required. Apart from the requirement in Mathematics assessment of applicants will be on an individual basis to determine suitability to successfully undertake the course.

Applicants without a leaving certificate are encouraged to first complete the Foundation Course in Science, Engineering and Technology. Graduates of the Foundation Course are automatically eligible for entry to the Diploma.

B.Sc. in Science & Technology Studies

Applicants with a Diploma or General Degree (at level 7 on the NFQ) in the area of Science / Engineering / Technology and relevant work experience may be granted direct entry to the Degree cycle. Such applications are considered on a case by case basis by the programme board on submission of a completed online application form, course syllabus and results transcript.

Specialist Diplomas

Applicants for the Specialist Diplomas should have a Diploma or General Degree (at level 7 on the NFQ) in Science / Engineering / Technology. Specialist Diplomas applications are considered on a case by case basis by the programme board on submission of a completed online application form, course syllabus and results transcript.

 

English Language Requirement

Applicants for all the above courses whose first language is not English must provide evidence that their English language ability meets the required standard for admission: e.g. Leaving Cert (or equivalent) English at Grade D ordinary level or above, TOEFL minimum score 550, IELTS minimum score 6.0, or TOEIC minimum score 750.


Fees

Diploma & B.Sc. Science & Technology Studies

The EU fee for 2011/2012 is €380 per module. The non-EU fee includes an additional payment of €500 per year. Fees are payable on a per module basis at the beginning of each semester (January and August). The fee includes course materials, tuition and exams. Textbooks (if required) are not included in the fee. Tax-payers may claim a tax rebate on their fees at the standard rate.

Specialist Diplomas

The EU fee for the Specialist Diploma in Medical Device Science and the Specialist Diploma in Environmental Sustainability is €1,900. The EU fee for the Specialist Diploma in Lean & Quality Systems is €2,000. The non-EU fee includes an additional payment of €500 per year. The fee includes course materials, tuition and exams. Textbooks (if required) are not included in the fee. The Specialist Diplomas are not eliglble for a tax rebate on fees.

 

Fee Scholarships for the Unemployed

If unemployed, you may be eligible for a fee scholarship under the following schemes:

  • ULearning fee fees scheme - please see the ULearning web site for further details
  • HEA Springboard Initiative, for those who have been unemployed since 10 March 2011 - please see www.springboard.ie for eligibility criteria and appliction form.
  • NUI Galway Adult & Continuing Education Office 50% fee scholarship, for those who have become unemployed since January 2008 - please see further details below.

Applicants must meet the minimum entry requirements for their chosen course in the first instance.

NUI Galway Adult & Continuing Education Fees Scholarship Programme

This scheme is designed for students who have become unemployed or on reduced working hours since January 2008. Scholarships will constitute a 50% contribution towards programme fees.

In addition to the programme application form please complete and return the NUI Galway Fees Scholarship form and proof of being in receipts of one of the following since January 2008:

  • Job-seekers Benefit
  • Job-seekers Allowance
